This Blog is in the response to Thinking Activity given by yesha ma'am. This is academic visit to Victoria park. It is also called as Natural Park.

 The purpose of the visit:

we are studying romantic age and mainly we are studying William Wordsworth. And everyone knows that William Wordsworth is nature poet and lack poet. It is a academic visit.this type of tour provide the students an opportunity of learning through travel, especially to places that they may not otherwise get to visit.

the keen observation of the nature's beauty also reminds of the romantic poets and extraordinary but in the simplest formation, they expressed the nature with their poetries.

"How nature can influence the soul" :

this quote is by our famous novelist Jane Austen. Nature helps us to grow in every aspects."Take a quiet walk with mother nature it will nurture your mind, body, and soul". Nature is always trying to tell us that we are not so superior or independent or alone or autonomous as we may think.

MACBETH

" False face must hide what the false heart doth know"

                       -Macbeth.

Q-A study of film adaptations of Macbeth.

This blog is in response to the task given by Dr.dilip barad sir. This blog is thinking activity given by our professor. In this blog I am sharing my thoughts on movie adaptation of macbeth.

Source of the play:

Shakespeare's chief source for macbeth was Holinshed's Chronicles (Macbeth), who based his account of Scotland's history, and Macbeth's in particular, on the Scotorum Historiae, written in 1527 by Hector Boece. Other minor sources contributed to Shakespeare's dramatic version of history, including Reginald Scot's Discovery of Witchcraft, and Daemonologie, written in 1599 by king james 1. Macbeth's words on dogs and men in Act 3, scene 1, (91-100), likely came from Colloquia, the memoirs of Erasmus (edition circa 1500). The plays of Seneca seem to have had great influence on Shakespeare, and, although no direct similarities to the work of seneca can be seen in Macbeth, the overall atmosphere of the play and the depiction of lady macbeth can be attributed to the Latin author.

MACBETH- The Tragedy of Macbeth.

let me start with who is writer of this amazing play?...all time favourite william shakespeare. he is best dramatist of all time.
he write best four tragedi one of them is Macbeth.

A tragedy (TRA-Jud-Dee) is a genre of drama focusing on stories of human flaw or weakness in one of the work's central characters;which then triggers a devastating event for those in that character's orbit. the greek tragoedia meaning "a formal play or poem with a sad ending".

there are many movies based on macbeth. i found seven(7) movies which is based on tragedy of macbeth.

1.Macbeth:(1948)- Directed by orson welles.

2.Throne of blood(1957)- Directed by akira kurosawa.

3.Macbeth(1971)- Directed by roman polanski.

4.Scotland,PA(2001)- Directed by billy Morrissette.

5.Maqbool(2003)- Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

6.Macbeth(2010)- Directed by  Rupert Goold.

7.Macbeth(2015)- Directed by Justin Kurzel.

today i am going to talk about Maqbool directed by vishal bhardwaj.let's talk about maqbool.

Maqbool is the first in the series of three appropriations of shakespeare by vishal bhardwaj. Macbeth-Maqbool, Hamlet-Haider, Othello-Omkara. Maqbool transport us to the under belly of modern mafia in mumbai from the medieval scotland. As in the birds play from the first shot itself maqbool feels Eerie and unnerving.

the opening scene is similar to the first act to shakespeare's play it stats with thunder and lightening and we see pandit and purohit(witches of maqbool) played brilliantly by legendary Om puri and Naseeruddin shah. they are the metamorphosed version of the three witches the blood splashes on the horoscope made by pandit.this powerful scene sets the future course of the film then ensure the hunger for power sexual jealousy betrayal and the madness caused by guilt. Bhardwaj portrayal of maqbool's character depicts a similar journey like that of shakespeare's Macbeth.

In  the beginning of the play macbeth is introduced to us as a general of extraordinary process but his ambition leads him towards a life of destruction the constant instigation from his wife lady macbeth, the prophecies of the witches compel. him to murder the noble king duncan.the character of maqbool also follows a similar pattern. when the film opens up maqbool played by irfan khan. irfan khan is seen as the most loyal and trusted member of abaji gang abaji played by Pankaj kapoor loves him and a father son like bond exists between them two.but soon all the love and respect gets replaced by the ambition caused by the prophecies of pundit. And sexual jealousy ignited by his love for nimmi.

nimmi is played by tabu and she is the personification of lady macbeth and how bhardwaj adapted her opens up a whole universe of passion play which was unexplored in the original text. maqbool revels in the politics of lust and passion with the vigor seldom witnessed in the hindi cinema it brings a sense of pain and redemption which was really  depicted in the hindi mainstream cinema in maqbool. vishal bhardwaj takes the emotion content beyond any other film of the crime or mafia genre in the play the ambition of macbeth to become the king was the sole motive behind killing duncan who was a father figure to him but unlike the play maqbool murders abaji because of his sexual jealousy his prime motive is to gain nimi's love and therefore talking abaji's position becomes secondary this changed the dynamics of the relationships completely.

suddenly the sexual conflict becomes the throne herself. the screenplay constructs a pyramid of doom with a cyclical inevitability we know these outlaws are doomed but their journey to their imminent rumination still pulls us in the structuring of the two sets of love stories between nimme and maqbool and abaji's innocent daughter semera and gudu is an ingenious method of projecting the two aspects of love the murky and the unviolated.

here it is important to note that the relationship between macbeth and lady macbeth was holy relationship guided by holy vows they are legitimate husband and wife but the film portrays a forbidden romance between maqbool and nimmi.through nimmi bhardwaj tries to rebuild the character of lady macbeth she is not merely a woman or strong will but possessed of evil passions.from the dialogue it becomes clear that nimmi has begun her game to instigate maqbool against abbaji after the murder of abbaji with each passing day maqbool grows rich in crime.

He becomes more villainous brutal and inhuman while nimmi on the other hand becomes more of a human wreck but the guilt does not leave maqbool alone also he is haunted by his own actions.when in the emotionally charged finale the time nimi asks maqbool "paakta na hamara ishq miya?"

we are looking at the underbelly of passion through a fantastic top angle lense where crime is simultaneously subjective and objective yo feel nothing but empathy for maqbool and nimmi.

irfan dawns the tormented lonsciencestrucken protagonist irfan's maqbool goes from stern self-denial to tortured crime and retribution irfan clutches at the character's throat and makes it articulate even in the most inaudible emotions. pankaj kapoor is a revenge melts into the display of utter compassion for his enchanting wife his portrayal of abaji lends the character the gravity that was missing in king duncan from his walk to his demeanor everything about abaji is power.

both macbeth and maqbool uses the darkness of the night as a sheila to hide their heinous crime seeking refuge in the night's dark are they fulfill their deepest darkest desires.

Rain, storm, thunder, and lightning symbolic of the  foreboding disorder and shakespeare's play the film also opens up with a similar description of raging violent weather. the famous dagger scene from macbeth has been modified to maqbool hallucinating blood spilled on the ground before he goes to kill abaji.

  •  macbeth informs the audience about his conflicting views.few of the notable soliloquies of macbeth consist of the dagger scene - Tragedy of Macbeth (2022) directed by joel cohn.
  • appearance of banco's ghost- Macbeth (2015) directed by justin kurze.
  •  the blood stains on lady macbeth- Maqbool(2003) directed by vishal bhardwaj.
  • death of lady macbeth- Macbeth(1979) T.V. Movie
in maqbool vishal bhardwaj choose to use his actor's process instead the decision is because of the difference in the art medium and luxury of having powerful actors.one very important character bhardwaj introduce in the film is that of nimi's child unlike the play where there is no such mention of lady macbeth having any children. in film nimmi gave birth to child before her death however who is the father of the child is not made clear and this remains an unsolved  mystery in the film.

In the end of the play macduff kills macbeth and carries his head on stage and malcolm is placed on the throne the order is restored because the legitimate heir of king duncan is crowned as king in the film however order gets restored when gudu and samira lovingly accepts the child of nimmi their act of humanity compensates for all the bloodshed and Enmity.

In all adaptations of films there universe began doing conspiracy against macbeth. For long time a cinematic adaptation is more popular in the world wide. It is a common trend in the history of Bollywood cinema to adapt stories of popular novel and dramas into films and so Shakespearean dramas are spare from this. Most of the film industries have been adapting the world literature in their industries. If we talk about Indian cinema there are so many directors who are adapting the literature .Mr. Vishal Bhardwaj is one among of them. He is very a famous in Bollywood. He started his career from music composer but later on he entered into the field of direction of movie and become a wonderful director.

let's sum-up with some points to be noted:

1.Defining comparative literature.
2.Analyzing the opening scenes.
3.the motives for the crime.
4.the art of characterization.
5.the dramatic devices.
-imagery
-irony
-soliloquizes and asides
-music
-setting
-ending
6.the points of contact and departure between text and film.
-point of contact.
-point of departure
7.conclusion

Pride and Prejudice.

This Blog is a response to the task which is given by our professor yesha ma'am. In this blog I am going to share my thinking skills on post-viewing tasks for the movie adaptation of Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice".

This blog is a post -viewing task of movie pride and prejudice(2005).

Q-1 Which version of the novel is more appealing? Novel or film(adaptation)? Why?

Ans:

Film adaptation of the novel “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen is better than novels according to me. In contemporary situations after corona and online classes we all are used to visual version more than reading activity. So, when we watch a movie adaptation of this novel Pride and Prejudice we can better understand novel’s concept and also we better understand what are they want to convey through dialogues and in movie we can see their expression and in novels while reading you can imagine that but you can not say that you perfectly understand.

So that’s why I like the movie version more than the novel.

Q-2 character of Elizabeth bennet

ANS:

Of all her heroines Jane Austen liked Elizabeth most. In the novel Pride and Prejudice our main character is elizabeth.

There are many characteristics of Elizabeth like women with pride. She is a very strong headed girl. She has her own point of view on anything. She is intelligent, independent as well as controlled. She has a choice of words when she speaks. She is very honest, she is very mature and also she seems to be more mature than her sister jane. She has some misunderstanding and also she has prejudice about Mr.Darcy.

  • Her physical charm:

Elizabeth is certainly not as beautiful as Jane is, still is graceful and charming there is something so elusive and indefinable about her charm that it defies all analysis perhaps it inheres in the beautiful expression of her dark eye which renders her face uncommonly intelligent. Darcy does not concede her any appreciable beauty when he first meets her: “she is tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt me.” but we hear the same darcy speaking in chapter 46, “it is many months since i have considered her as one of the handsomest women of my acquaintance.”

  • Her moral courage:

Elizabeth declines two marriage proposals both undesirable but both attractive in their own way; she is a young, unprovided girl. Her father’s estate is entailed on mr.collins. Her connections are very low and vulgar. It is not certain that any other attractive offers of marriage will be made to her ever in future. Her mother warns her that she will not be able to maintain her after her father’s death. And in her society, ageing maids were faced with the appalling prospect of a bleak future full of privation and humiliation. Mr.collins’s proposal at least promises the comforts and security of a home,if no love. Mr.Darcy’s proposal is still more attractive, for even she realises that to have been mistress of pemberley would be something. In These circumstances,it needed great moral and spiritual courage to reject these proposals. But Elizabeth did not want to marry where there was no love.

But it is not only these marriage proposals where she exhibits her strength of character.there are indeed a toughness of fibre and fine independendence of mind which assert themselves whenever she is challenged or she is up against an act of absurdity or folly. She draws herself up most spiritedly in all the scenes in which she is matched against darcy.

  • Her charm will never stale:

Elizabeth is a lovable heroine indeed of all Jane Austen's heroines, she impresses and delights us most what Shakespeare said of Cleopatra may safely be applied to her: time can not wither her nor custom stale her charm.

Q-3 character of Fitzwilliam Darcy:

ANS:

There are many characteristics in our hero. The hero of the novel, man with pride, reserved, introvert, observer, silent lover, true lover, superiority complex, his pride corrected by love.

  • The hero of the novel:

Fizwilliam Darcy the owner of the pemberley estate worth ten thousand pounds a year is the hero of the novel. He is twenty seven, tall, handsome, and of a stately appearance like elizabeth. He is one of the intricate characters of the two “he was at the same time haughty, reserved and fastidious and his manners, though well-bred, were not inviting. He looks so stern and inflexible, austere and exclusive that everybody including his own sister Georgiana holds him in awe.

  • His pride:

Darcy’s pride is in evidence right from the moment he makes his appearance.he declines being introduced to any other lady except the two in his own party and keeps quiet most of the evening. He is immediately declared to be ‘the proudest, most disagreeable man in the world’. He himself thinks he is reserved for he tries to justify his conduct on this particular evening

“ I am ill-qualified to recommend myself to strangers..I certainly do not have the talent which some people possess of conversing easily with those whom i have never seen before..”

Q-4 give illustration of the society of that time:

ANS:

Jane Austan write novels in 18th century there are many things what included in her novels like some of her novels character are educated and some of them are not, we can see in pride and prejudice there is elizabeth bennet she is very fond of reading a books and than there is her sister jane she don’t like to read.. And at that time women have to learn how to play piano and also they have to know how to knit.

Marriage, of course, was just about the only acceptable role for any woman. Women, like Austen herself, who passed beyond their youth without marrying became spinsters. They had no formal role in society and were occasionally a burden to their families. Even worse was the fate of educated young women of good standing whose fortunes were thrown in jeopardy by the sudden loss of their family. With no fortune, these women were nearly unmarriageable and might be required to enter the servant class as a governess of wealthy children in order to provide a living for themselves.

Q-5 If you were a director or screenplay writer, what sort of difference would you make in the making of a movie?

ANS:

This movie is a great creation of art. I don’t want to change anything in this movie but if i was directector of this movie i would like to change about mrs.bennet, she is very childish and immature and she force her daughter’s to get married into rich family.she is mother of five daughter so..she have to understand her daughter’s life and her daughter’s choice. I want to put one extra scene in the movie, it was the marriage of Jane and Bingle and also i put one death scene of aunty of mr.darcy.

Q-6 who would be your choice of actors to play the role of characters?

ANS:

Elizabeth -emma weston

Mr.Darcy-daniel radcliffe

Mr.bingley- robert downey jr

Jane- rashmika mandanna.

Mr. collins- ranber kapoor

Wickham-vicky kaushal

Q-7 write a note on a scene you liked the most:

ANS:

I like the whole movie . I immediately fell in love with the characters and the novel's story. When this movie starts it starts very slowly but in the middle of the movie when Mr.darcy confesses his  love to miss.elizabeth But elizabeth refuses to get married to Mr.darcy because she did not like him.

Pride & Prejudice (2005) - 'Last Man in The World' Clip

We can say this scene is an iconic scene of the movie: i love this scene so much when in the end miss.elizabeth accept mr.darcy.

You Have Bewitched Me - Pride & Prejudice (10/10) Movie CLIP (2005) HD

This is my youtube video link. I tried my best.

https://youtu.be/UAYyOLWuE3E

Q-8 compare the narrative strategy of novel and movie:

ANS:

Narrative style in novel and movie that both are different. There is a very nicely described story in the novel and in the movie there are time limits so in two hours they can not complete that whole novel.

thinking skills- workshop

Thinking skills workshop by- professor Milan Pandya.

This Two day workshop was organised by our department of english. In the workshop we learned so many things. In this workshop we learn how to think critically in situations when you have to make a decision on the spot. Professor Milan Pandya is a teacher ,trainer and educator in the field of thinking skills, critical, creative, and design thinking, English language teaching and communication skills.

This workshop started on 13th august. On a First day of the workshop, Dr.dilp barad sir introduced the professor. Milan pandya. After that I gave him a bouquet and welcomed prof.milan pandya at our department. I really like one line from dilip sir’s brief introduction. This lines are like this,

“ a stupidest question can bring the smartest answer”

This line of sir helped us a lot during the whole workshop.

DAY-1:

On the first day of the workshop Milan sir told us that he also came here in 2016. After that he fist asked us, ``Do you know about socrates? We all know about plato and aristotle and after he started with this point:

1.logical thinking

2.rational thinking

3.scientific thinking

These three pillars of critical thinking. He said that thinking is a live skill. In contemporary times everyone has to know at least one skill in their life. After that sir asked a question about, “what is the meaning of the word ‘critical thinking’. ” after he define critical thinking by given a definition of his own.

“ thinking about thinking in order to improve thinking”

In this definition he emphasised on thinking by using the word thinking thrice. He further explained that why we are different from other species is because we have thinking abilities. Also he said that thinking is the soul of our body.he said that humans became rational animals by their thinking skills.

Further he gave justification of his words by providing six major examples. He explained that context is everything.

I found this video on youtube. It is about, “what is critical thinking?”

after that he define one more thing is,

"if something is true what else has to be true in that "

in this statement he said that if something is true than what else has to be true like he gave certain examples of katrina kaif and actor satish shah.In class we practiced some lighter examples of critical thinking

one more funny example of observation is starplus TV serial yeh hai mohabbatein one picture from that:

look at this picture that lady character she has facture in her hand and it is obvious that she can wear sari by her own. and look at this picture carefully in this her makeup and hairstyle is done perfectly. and when we see this picture in critical way we can see that if her hand is fractured how can she wear that flawless makeup and pretty hairstyle?.

further he talk about belief and conspiracy theory:

"belief is important part of conspiracy theory"

by all this pictures sir explained that always be a critic.for that we need to search for the truth.

after this conspiracy theory he presented a quote by Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tazu.

"your teacher might be wrong. learn to think for yourself "

be clear about "what do you want?" and "why do you want?"

"be clear about yourself "

in the end of the first day he told us to be clear about three things :

1.writing
2.marketing
3.thinking.

“Man is the Storytelling Animal, and that in stories are his identity, his meaning, and his lifeblood.” -Salman Rushdie ( Luka and the fire of Like)

DAY-2:

the second day was all about thought experiments. man is rational animal but we can not say that man is born with rationality, for that cultivation training plays a vital role.

"man has capacity to be a rational animal."

critical and creative thinkers are not born thinkers, they go through a thinking process every time and train their mind to think.
One might feel that question is a way of thinking and contracts wh idea of training a mind to think because infants keep on questioning. But it is to be understood that asking questions doesn't mean that one is a critical thinker. Choice of question and arising to right question at a right time and place is important.

in this picture this picture did not have any type of creative . so we can say that this picture is not work of art.it does not add any value in our life. this picture have no use.

after this to test our creative power of our mind, sir gave us picture , and we had to categorized things.
it is called Aristotelian classification of things.

We had to make a category in which at least two items from the image can be considered.

you can make categories and put at least two items in it for example:

fast-food categories-sandwich,pizza,chess,ice-cream..
put your valuable answers about this in comment.

Patience is necessary to be creative, as physique can be made with patience in the training. Abstract thinking is not at all an easy task.

at the last part of the workshop, we had very wonderful rather difficult activities. in this, we got two problematic situations.in that situation we can not choose any one option to save lives of people and also we do not have choice to save all people we have to put one person's life in danger. so we all are in dilemma what to do or what not to do?

after that i came to know that when sir told us to read between the lines.now in 21st century we have to observe behind the lines.

our workshop is ended on good notes and we learn so many new things in this workshop. in last we have feedback and vote for thanking sir for this marvellous  experience.

thank Barad sir and Milan sir for this wonderful workshop and worthy weekend. attending this fun and knowledgeable workshop was truly enjoyable.

Thanks for reading this blog. keep reading, keep loving literature....
