Book Reading Day- "An Introduction to the Another World"

Book Reading Day- 30th December 2023

This is an invitation card for the event.

On the momentous occasion of December 30th, bidding adieu to 2023 and ushering in 2024, the Library Committee orchestrated a captivating event under the enchanting banner, 'Introduction to Another World.' The choice of this title was inherently intriguing, acknowledging the diverse stories each of us carries within the realms of our own existence. The event served as a gateway for all attendees to embark on a profound literary journey, connecting with the very soul of language and literature.

In a world saturated with technology, where the prevailing belief suggests a diminishing allure of books, this day aimed to challenge such notions. Two contrasting perspectives emerged—some held the belief that people are losing interest in reading, succumbing to the allure of entertainment shows and apps. On the other hand, the counterargument posited that the digital age provides myriad ways to access e-books, preserving the essence of reading. The event commenced by acknowledging this dichotomy, emphasizing that irrespective of the format, reading is a celebration of the written word. This sentiment was eloquently highlighted by the keynote speaker at the outset of the event.

The speaker underscored the idea that reading an e-book is equivalent to immersing oneself in the content of a hard copy. To exemplify this, he engaged the audience by reading excerpts from the novel 'Reatsamadhi' by Geetanjali Shree, both in its original Hindi form and its English translation by Deist Rockwell. The audience witnessed one version displayed on a mobile device, embracing the technological wave, while the other existed in the traditional and tangible form of a hard copy. The speaker's demonstration skillfully bridged the perceived gap between the analog and digital realms of literature.

Further enriching the event, the speaker recited poignant poems, including Harish Minsharu's 'પરોઢ' and 'હું બ્લોગ પર ટાઇપ કરતો હતો એક ગઝલ' along with Meena Kandasamy's 'Prayers overhead in the Bathroom.' These verses not only added a lyrical charm to the gathering but also showcased the diverse linguistic and thematic dimensions that literature encompasses.

In conclusion, 'Introduction to Another World' successfully challenged the notion that the charm of books is waning in the digital age. Instead, it reinforced the idea that reading, in any format, remains a profound celebration of the written word, an enduring bridge that connects individuals to the rich tapestry of human expression.

Special appreciation was expressed towards the leaders of the library committee for skillfully coordinating the event. Applause resounded for the ICT committee leaders who diligently recorded and made both sessions accessible on the department's YouTube channel.
